LOCAL SPORTS 1-27-23

The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles were active last night as they played a split doubleheader against the Brandon Valley Lynx. The Gazelles fell in Brandon 43 to 25, while the Bucks also came up short as they suffered a close loss to Brandon Valley, 58 to 54.

Next up for both the Bucks and Gazelles is a home double header tomorrow afternoon against Douglas, with coverage provided on KYNT and KYNTV. Pregame will begin at 1:00 PM, with the girls set to tip off at 1:30, and the boys to follow. Bryce Ladwig will be on the call.

            The Mount Marty Lancers men’s and women’s basketball teams are off this weekend following their road trip to Jamestown earlier this week. The next time the Lancers take the floor will be next Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa to take on Briar Cliff in a GPAC double feature.

            The Mount Marty Lancers indoor track and field squad return to action today for Day 1 of the 2-Day Mount Marty Invitational & Multi-Event Competition. Today’s events are set to begin at 2:00 PM, while tomorrow’s competition will begin at 10:00 AM. Both days of the invitational will take place inside the Ruth Donohoe First Dakota Fieldhouse in Yankton.

            The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles wrestling teams took the trip to Pierre yesterday evening to take on the Governors in a varsity duel. The Bucks would be shutout by the Governors as their duel ended 84 to 0. As for the Gazelles, Naveah Leonard would win her matchup via a 2 to 1 decision, but in the end the Gazelles would also fall to Pierre 6 to 3.

Next up for both squads is a trip to Brookings tomorrow morning for an invitational hosted at Brookings high school. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 AM.

            The South Dakota Coyotes men’s and women’s basketball teams squared off with Western Illinois last night in a split double feature. The two universities would split victories as well, as the Coyote women would secure a 74 to 56 victory thanks to 20 points from Carley Duffney, and an 18 point 12 rebound double-double from Grace Larkins. The USD men would suffer a road defeat at the hands of the Leathernecks thanks to a Trenton Massner 3 pointer with 2 seconds remaining in the game, as Western Illinois took a 75 to 72 win.

            The St. Thomas Tommies will be the next opponent for both squads as the USD women will host the Tommies inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center at 1:00 PM, while the men will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota for their game at 7:00. Both games are set to take place tomorrow afternoon/evening.
