LOCAL SPORTS REPORT 4-21-22

  • Former University of South Dakota and current West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit has announced the signing of Kyah Watson to a grant-in-aid for the 2022-23 academic year. A 5-foot-10 guard from Rapid City, South Dakota, Watson played the last two seasons at the University of South Dakota, where she helped the Coyotes win two Summit League Tournament Championships, a regular-season championship and reach the NCAA Tournament in each of her two years, including the Sweet 16 in 2021-22. She will have three years of eligibility remaining. The Coyotes have lost four starters from last season, and Maddie Krull is still in the transfer portal.
  • Coming off their first loss of the season earlier in the week, the Yankton Bucks Tennis squad now prepares for a varsity quadrangular in Harrisburg today vs the host Tigers and Rapid City Christian beginning at noon.
  • After seeing their last two meets cancelled due to forecasted weather, Yankton Track & Field will finally be able to compete today, and at home, hosting Deubrook, Mitchell Christian, Parkston, & SF Christian. This is a SDHSAA sanctioned event, and begins at 330pm at Williams Field at Yankton High School.
  • Yankton Gazelles Golf will swing their clubs again today, and get to do so at Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton, hosting Harrisburg, Mitchell and Sioux Falls Washington. This is the Gazelles first competition since last Monday. Tee off is scheduled for 1pm.
  • Yankton Bucks Baseball is back in action tomorrow evening, as the 7-1 Bucks take on the defending Class A State Champion Harrisburg. Catch the action live on KYNT and KYNTV with Tehl Tanner, pregame 430pm, first pitch at 5pm.
  • South Dakota State’s Noah Boraas has been named the Summit League Golfer of the Week by the conference office. Boraas tied for 15th place at the Hawkeye Invitational over the weekend while posting the best 54-hole score of his career with a 218 (+2) final scorecard. His final round of the tournament matched his career best, a 71 (-1). Boraas tallied seven birdies and only nine bogeys in the tournament. This is the first career weekly honor for Boraas.
  • For the second day in a row, the South Dakota State baseball team recorded a season high in hits. And for the second consecutive day, the Jackrabbits won a game via the 10-run rule, downing Briar Cliff, 13-2, in seven innings Wednesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field. In notching their ninth win in their last 11 games, the Jacks improved to 15-17 overall. Briar Cliff dropped to 24-15 on the season. The Jackrabbits are idle this weekend and are scheduled to return to action next Tuesday (April 26) at Minnesota. First pitch is slated for 6 pm at Siebert Field on the U of M campus in Minneapolis.
  • The South Dakota State football team will wrap up spring practices by hosting its annual Spring Game Saturday afternoon. The intrasquad game, which pits the Jackrabbit offense against the defense, is slated for 1 p.m. at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex. SDSU is scheduled to kick off the 2022 campaign Sept. 3 at Iowa.
  • The Mount Marty baseball team faced Dakota Wesleyan University in non-conference action last night at Riverside Field. It was a high scoring affair with a 13-12 score entering the 9th inning. Mount Marty had the one run lead and sent in Chris Rofe for the final three outs. With the bases loaded in the 9th, Rofe struck out three batters in a row to give the Lancers the 13-12 victory. Mount Marty is now 29-12 overall, 13-7 in conference and look to host Briar Cliff University over the weekend for a four-game series. There will be two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday both starting at 1. All weekend baseball coverage on KYNT and KYNTV with pregame starting at 12:30 each day.
  • For the first time in program history, the Lancer softball team is receiving votes in the top 25. Tomorrow, the Lancer softball team will host Midland University at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader at Sertoma Park in Yankton. Then on Saturday, MMU will host Concordia for two games beginning at 1.
  • Both the Mount Marty men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to Doane University in GPAC tennis last night. Both teams lost with a score of 7-0. This was the last men’s team contest of the season, they finish with an 0-9-2 record. The women’s team is now 0-7-2 and have one game left on the schedule. The Lancers will travel to Omaha to battle the College of Saint Marty on April 25th to finish their season.
