LOCAL SPORTS REPORT 3-9-22

  • It was a blue state Monday night, but a red state all yesterday afternoon as the South Dakota Coyote women’s basketball team secured their third straight Summit League Title, defeating in-state rival South Dakota State 56-45. According to coach Plitzuweit, the Coyotes relied on toughness and fearlessness to take the rubber match between the two teams.

Hannah Sjerven (Sherven) led the Coyotes offensively with 19 points, while Chloe Lamb added 17 and Liv Korngable chipped in 11 points. South Dakota awaits its NCAA Tournament draw with Selection Sunday at 7pm.

  • South Dakota State Men’s Basketball took home the Summit League Title last night vs North Dakota State University 75-69. The Jackrabbits were led in scoring by Douglas Wilson who notched 21 points. The Jackrabbits will wait until selection Sunday to see who their opponent will be in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Both the Class D1 Hartington-Cedar Catholic and Class C2 Crofton Girls advanced in their respective Nebraska High School Basketball State Tournaments yesterday afternoon. Hartington-Cedar Catholic, the 8th seed, upset #1 seed Elmwood-Murdock 47-46.

The Trojans now face off in the semifinal round vs 4th seeded Shelton this Thursday at 9am. The 4th seeded Crofton Warriors handed 5th seeded Ponca their second loss of the season, both of which have come vs Crofton by a 41-38 final score.   • South Dakota High School Girls Basketball begins their respective state tournaments tomorrow. Class B plays at Watertown’s Civic Arena, Class A in Brookings’ Frost Arena, and Class AA at the Monument in Rapid City.
