MORNING SPORTS UPDATE 10-29-21

  • It was an exciting night of playoff football across the state last night
  • The 4th seeded Yankton Bucks started strong in their 42-21 home quarterfinal victory vs the visiting 5th seeded Mitchell Kernels, scoring five unanswered touchdowns entering halftime, the first of which was a six-yard connection from Rugby Ryken to Cody Oswald. Ryken ended the night with six touchdown passes, three to Tyler Sohler, two to Cody Oswald, and one to Cameron Zahrbock. The Bucks defense also allowed just 95 rushing yards to slow down the Kernels. The Bucks now turn their attention north to Tea Area where the #1 Titans await the Bucks after defeating 8th seeded Sturgis 57-10.   • On the other side of the 11AA bracket, 7th seeded Aberdeen Central upset 2nd seeded Brookings 42-34 to advance to the semifinal round on the road vs 4x defending 11AA State Champion Pierre, who dispatched 6th seeded Watertown 38-9.
  • #1 Avon defeated #8 Alcester-Hudson 30-14 in the Class 9B Quarterfinal Round last night, moving on to the semi-final round to host #5 Dell Rapids St. Mary, who defeated #4 Gayville-Volin 42-22 in their own quarterfinal matchup. Kickoff time TBD this coming Friday.
  • In Class 11A, #3 Vermillion defeated #6 Tri-Valley in the Quarterfinal Round 21-7, and now host Milbank this coming Friday, kickoff time TBD. If the Tanagers advance to the State Championship Game, not only will they have home field advantage (DakotaDome), but it will be the first time Vermillion has made the Championship in over two decades.
  • The Nebraska High School Football Playoffs Continue Tonight
  • The #9 Hartington Cedar Catholic Trojans prepare to push towards a Class C2 State Football Title, but will have to square up against #8 North-Platte St. Patricks on the road.   • The (0-8) Lancer football team plays its last home game of their programs inaugural season in search of the programs first win as Hastings College comes to town.   • Lancers Volleyball returns to action today, traveling to the Corn Palace in Mitchell to take on nationally ranked #15 Dakota-Wesleyan, first serve 730pm. The (8-18) Lancers have one game following today’s, a home matchup vs College of Saint Mary on Tuesday.
