LOCAL SPORTS WRAP 10-4-21

  • What started as a defensive struggle in the first quarter, ended with an offensive barrage from the Yankton Bucks football team Friday night. The Bucks secured 28 points in the 2nd quarter alone on the way to their 45-0 shutout over ESD rival Mitchell on the road. Amongst many exceptional performances, Cody Oswald shined the brightest in the victory, scoring three touchdowns, the second of which was a 47-yard punt return with :37 seconds remaining in the first half.

Cameron Zahrbock and Max Raab also scored in the victory, both from the right arm of Rugby Ryken, who tossed four touchdown passes in the game. The Bucks defense also shined bright, allowing just 2 yards passing and 3.6 yards per play in total offense. The Bucks also secured a defensive touchdown, coming from a fumble recovery in the endzone by Gavin Haselhorst. Yankton, now 3-3 on the season, are in the middle of the pack in the AA standings at 6th, and will host their final regular season home game of the season this Friday at Crane-Youngworth Field as the Scoopers of Sturgis roll into town.

  • The Yankton Gazelles finished third in the South Dakota State Class A High School Softball Tournament on Saturday in Sioux Falls. The Gazelles’ tournament and season ended with a 15-10 loss to Harrisburg. Sioux Falls Lincoln won the Class A title after defeating Harrisburg 9-6. The Gazelles finish the season with a 16-15-1 record.
  • State Tournament play begins for two Yankton sports today, as the Gazelles Tennis squads (20-5) begin competition in the Class A State Tournament in Sioux Falls beginning at 8am, and the Bucks Golf Squad takes their first swings of the Class AA State Tournament in Huron at 10am. Each tournament runs through tomorrow.
  • The South Dakota High School Boys and Girls Soccer playoff brackets and first round pairing have been released. The Gazelles (4-7-2) secured the 13th seed and will travel west to take on #4 seed (9-2-1) Rapid City Stevens at Sioux Park beginning at 4pm MT tomorrow. The Bucks (11-1-1) secured the 3rd seed and play host to #14 seed Brookings (4-8-1) at Crane-Youngworth Field tomorrow as well.   • Yankton Competitive Dance & Cheer competed at Sioux Falls Roosevelt this past Saturday. The Dance team finished 11th overall with a 192 score, with Harrisburg securing the top spot with a 277 score. Yankton’s Dance Team fared a bit better in the competition, settling for 5th place and a 264.75 score, while Brandon Valley took top honors with a 286.5 score. Each team now prepares for another trip north on I-29 tomorrow as they compete in the Brandon Valley Invitational beginning at 5pm.
  • Yankton Cross Country competes at the Howard Invite today, but the Yankton runners will be running as “bandits” as they were a late entry into the event. This is due to a pair of cancellations last week. Their results will not be included in the events final standings. The event begins at 2pm today.
  • The South Dakota Coyotes Football Program took care of business Saturday during the Dakota Days celebration, rolling over Indiana State 38-10 to improve to 3-2 overall. The Yotes are 5-0 in D-Days games under head coach Bob Nielson. The Yotes now prepare to host the University of North Dakota this Saturday at 2pm.
