The Yankton County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to Lewis and Clark Lake after a report of a juvenile who had gone for a walk and failed to return home on Thursday.
Upon arrival, deputies located the juvenile’s vehicle near the west boat ramp, with electronic devices left inside.
After an initial search of the surrounding area was unsuccessful, Yankton Search and Rescue was called in to assist.
After continuing the search, the juvenile was located near the horse camp trails. It was determined that she had gone for a long hike and became lost after dark.
Unable to safely find her way out of the woods, she remained in place until sunrise before continuing to walk, eventually being located by her father.
The juvenile was evaluated by EMS and has since returned home safely.
