Former Yankton High School Coach Dan Mitchell has been announced as a 2025-26 inductee into the South Dakota Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Mitchell’s 30+ years at Yankton High School began in 1985, when he worked with the football and wrestling programs.
In wrestling, he served as both assistant and head coach, helping guide 39 qualifiers to the state tournament, along with conference titles and a 1986 state championship.
In football, he served as a longtime assistant coach for Yankton’s highly successful program, which captured 6 Class 11AA state championships, 12 Eastern South Dakota Conference titles, and 10 region championships during his tenure.
This latest honor adds to an impressive list of accolades for Mitchell, including being named SDHSCA Assistant Coach of the Year, a Max Hawk Award recipient, and multiple state and national coaching awards
Coach Mitchell and the rest of this year’s Hall of Fame Class will be honored at the SDHSCA 55th Annual Awards Ceremony on July 19th at 1:00 PM at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center.
Ten Yankton teams will begin their quest for a state title tomorrow at the USA Softball South Dakota Youth Fastpitch Class A/B State Championships in Sioux Falls.
Competing for Yankton this year will be Fury Gazelles (18u), Fury Lancers (16u), Fury Diamonds (14u), Fury Black (14u), Fury Red (12u), Fury Outlaws (12u), Fury Storm (12u), Fury Lancers (12u), Fury White (10u), and Fury Lancers (10u).
Games will take place throughout the day on Friday, with the first matchups taking place at 8:30 AM.
Yankton Post 12 will be one of eighty teams competing in this year’s Gopher Classic Legion Baseball Tournament, beginning tomorrow.
Yankton will compete in Pool D in Eden Prairie. Also in Yankton’s pool are Eden Prairie, Farmington, Hastings, and Lincoln Hotel Group.
Yankton will play the first game of the day tomorrow at 9:00 AM against Hastings, before taking on Lincoln at 2:00 PM.
Heading into tonight’s slate of South Central League games, the Yankton Lakers and Tabor Bluebirds have been ranked in the latest South Dakota Amateur Baseball polls.
Yankton is 4th in Class A, with Tabor tied for 8th in Class B, as the Lakers and Bluebirds are currently the top-2 teams in the South Central League.
On the docket tonight for the SCL, Wynot will host Crofton, Irene will host Menno, Freeman hosts Lesterville, and Yankton hosts Tabor. All games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM.
