The Yankton Bucks swept their best-of-three series with Sturgis this past weekend, earning a spot in the Class A High School Baseball State Tournament.
The series began on Friday with a 16-2 win in five innings for the Bucks. Beck Ryken threw the complete game for the win on the mound. Yankton combined for ten hits and nine walks in the win. Christian Weier drove in a team-high three runs.
Game two saw the Bucks shut out the Scoopers 16-0 on Saturday. Sam Gokie struck out four batters and allowed only three hits over four innings for the win. Simon Kampshoff was perfect at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Yankton enters the Class A State Tournament as the #4 seed. They will face #5 Rapid City Stevens at 2:30 PM on Friday in the opening round. This year’s state tournament will be held at Ronken Field, home of Augustana University.
The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles both took 5th-place team finishes over the weekend at the ESD Track and Field Championships in Watertown.
Quinn Brinkman bested her own school record in the high jump, finishing 2nd at 5-7. Also earning 2nd place finishes for the Gazelles were Burkely Olson in the long jump (17-6 ¾), and Juliet Remington in the triple jump (36-6).
Sawyer Maibaum had the top individual finish for the Bucks, placing 2nd in the high jump at 6-3. Mile Drotzmann (110 hurdles) and Jack Brandt (400-meter) both took 3rd in their respective events. Tegan LaCroix, Landon Merkel, Abe O’Brien, and Owen Eidsness earned the highest relay finish, placing 2nd in the medley.
Yankton will travel to Sioux Falls on May 21st for a “last chance” meet at Howard Wood Field.
Yankton Gazelles Golf placed 5th as a team at this past Friday’s Mitchell Invitational at Lake View Golf Course.
Yankton shot 341 as a team, led by a 76 from Ellia Homstad, who tied for 9th individually. Rounding out Yankton’s score, Sabrina Krajewski shot 80, Bailey Anderson shot 92, and Josslyn Elwood finished at 93.
Yankton travels to Brookings Country Club for their next meet, beginning at 10:00 AM on May 21st.
Tonight’s scheduled Class AA Softball matchup between Tea Area and Yankton has been postponed due to field conditions after this weekend’s heavy rainfall.
The game will now be played on Friday in Tea. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM for the varsity, with the JV to follow.
Yankton now turns their attention to Tuesday, as they are scheduled to host Watertown at Sertoma Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM Tuesday.
The South Dakota Coyotes made history on Saturday, claiming their first-ever NCAA Softball Tournament victory with a 4-2 win over Louisville.
Autumn Iversen led the Coyotes with a pair of hits in the win. Madison Evans threw a complete game, tallying four strikeouts in the circle.
The Coyotes would see their season come to an end later in the day, as they fell to Grand Canyon 5-4.
USD finishes the season with a 21-36-1 overall record, earning a Summit League Tournament Championship, their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, and their first win in the competition.
Yesterday’s scheduled South Central League Baseball matchup between Wynot and Freeman was postponed due to storms that swept through the area.
League play will resume on Thursday with a trio of games. Crofton at Menno, Freeman at Tabor, and Irene at Yankton.
