The Yankton Bucks wrapped up their regular season with a Senior Day sweep of Brookings yesterday afternoon in a Class A Baseball doubleheader.
The Bucks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning of game one, and weathered a comeback attempt to hold on 8-5. Beck Ryken led the way at the plate, finishing with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Game two saw the Bucks end the day with a 6-4 win. Senior Liam Villanueva finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate with a run scored. Chase Cooley earned the win on the mound.
Yankton enters the postseason ranked 4th in Class A. They will host Sturgis in a best-of-three regional series beginning on Friday, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
Yankton Gazelles Softball split their two games on Saturday against Spearfish and Sturgis in Mitchell.
The Gazelles defeated Spearfish 15-2. Izzy Gurney ended the game with a grand slam to force the mercy rule. Isabell Sheldon added two hits, including a home run.
Yankton would fall 10-3 in their matchup with Sturgis. Yankton was held to four hits as a team, two from Eliza Gurney, and one each from Jocelyn Behrns and Kalli Koletzky.
The Gazelles travel to Beresford tomorrow afternoon for an inter-class matchup with the Watchdogs. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
Yankton Gazelles Golf placed 5th out of 14 teams on Friday at their home invitational, held at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club.
Yankton shot a 385 as a team, led by a 90 from Ellia Homstad, who tied for 12th. Also for Yankton, Sabrina Krajewski and Olivia Woods shot 97, Bailey Anderson shot 101, Josslyn Elwood shot 103, and Harper Anderson shot 105.
O’Gorman would claim the team title with a 331. Aberdeen Central’s Olivia Braun shot a 73 to claim the individual title.
Yankton will host Mitchell for the Marchand Cup on Tuesday at Fox Run Golf Course.
Today is the opening day of the ESD Conference Tennis Meet, hosted by the Yankton Bucks at the YHS Tennis Courts.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM this afternoon. Opening matches for each Yankton athlete are as follows:
- Flight One Singles: Harrison Krajewski will face Dawson Pederson of Aberdeen Central.
- Flight Two Singles: Luke Moeller will face Asher Dannenbring of Mitchell.
- Flight Three Singles: Chris Rockne will face Cooper Star of Mitchell.
- Flight Four Singles: Ethan Marsh will face Dawson Hartman of Watertown.
- Flight Five Singles: Jack Pedersen will face Riley Winegar of Huron.
- Flight Six Singles: Zane Becker will face Marty Blanchette of Pierre.
- Flight One Doubles: Moeller and Krajewski will face Dawson and Gannon Pederson of Aberdeen Central
- Flight Two Doubles: Rockne and Marsh will face Asher Dannenbring and Dawson Adams of Mitchell.
- Flight Three Doubles: Pedersen and Becker will face Marty Blanchette and Jacoby LaRoche of Pierre.
The South Dakota Coyotes earned their first-ever Summit League Softball Tournament Championship on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Omaha in the final.
The Coyotes entered the final as underdogs at 20-34-1 on the season, while Omaha held a 37-12 overall record.
Madison Evans pitched the complete game in the circle for USD, striking out eight batters and allowing only one hit en route to the win.
Following the game, Evans was named MVP of the tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament team alongside teammates Brooke Carey, Autumn Iversen, Kiya Johnson, and Delaney White.
The Coyotes earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid with the win. They will face the #1 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Lincoln Regional on Friday.
