The Yankton Bucks swept the Watertown Arrows Sunday afternoon in their Class A Baseball doubleheader.
The Bucks scored two runs in the top of the second inning of game one to take a 2-0 win. Beck Ryken threw a complete game shutout on the mound, tallying five strikeouts.
Game two saw the Bucks score in each of the final three innings for a 4-1 win. Six different Bucks recorded a hit. Sam Gokie went the distance on the mound, striking out ten batters while allowing only three hits and one run.
The Bucks are now 14-4 on the season. They will return to action on Friday with a home doubleheader against the Tea Area Titans.
The Mount Marty Lancers finished 4th on the men’s side and 9th on the women’s side of the GPAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
The Lancer men captured three event victories, including two from Logan Ferrari in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races. The team of Samuel Favaretto, Bastien Furstoss, Zavio Prato, and Jet Janvrin took first in the men’s 1600-meter relay.
Also finishing highly for the Lancer Men, Osiel Cantu was 2nd in the 400-meter hurdles, Austin Gobel was 3rd in the 200-meter, Prato was 2nd in the 400-meter with Furstoss in 3rd, Kellan Odell was 2nd in the Javelin, and Joe Cross placed 3rd in the 10,000 and 4th in the 5,000.
The Lancer women were led by a 1-2 finish in the pole vault. Mya Zohner cleared 12-10 to win the event, earning an auto bid to the NAIA National meet. Paige Clausen followed in 2nd, clearing 11-9.
The Doane Tigers would sweep the team awards, placing first in the men’s and women’s competitions.
The Lancers have two more events scheduled before the NAIA Championships. The first on May 8th in Seward, Nebraska, and the second on May 9th in Kearney, Nebraska.
The Howard Wood Relays took place this past weekend in Sioux Falls, and the Yankton Bucks and Gazelles earned multiple top-8 finishes.
The Bucks were led by William Rounds, who cleared 13-09 in the pole vault to finish 6th. Sawyer Maibaum also grabbed a podium finish, placing 8th in the high jump, clearing 6-02.
The Gazelles also put a pair of athletes in the top 8. Juliet Remington posted a distance of 35-08.50 in the triple jump to take 7th place, and Burkley Olson cleared 17-02.75 to place 8th in the high jump.
Next up for the Bucks and Gazelles is the First Dakota Relays at Williams Field on Thursday. Over a dozen schools are currently scheduled to compete in the event.
Yankton Gazelles Softball went 1-1 over their two games in Sioux Falls this past Friday afternoon.
Yankton dropped game one to Dakota Valley 9-4. Five Gazelles recorded a hit in the loss: Jocelyn Behrns, Kyra Tjeerdsma, Madison Musfelt, Brooklyn King, and Eliza Gurney.
Game two saw the Gazelles defeat Sioux Falls Christian 16-8. Behrns led the team, finishing 3 for 5 at the plate. September Rauch added two hits and three RBIs.
Yankton returns home tonight to host the Vermillion Tanagers. First pitch from Sertoma Park is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
Yankton Gazelles Golf placed 3rd out of 5 teams on Friday at an invitational at Brandon Golf Course.
Yankton shot 369 as a team, led by a 4th-place finish from Ellia Homstad. O’Gorman would claim the team title, shooting 347. O’Gorman’s Erin Hurd (1st) and Ari Jacobs (2nd) swept the top two individual spots.
Following Homstad’s 84 for Yankton, Harper Anderson shot 93, Josslyn Elwood and Olivia Woods shot 96, and Everly Bruening shot 97 to round out team scoring.
The Gazelles return to action on Tuesday for a varsity quadrangular at Bakker Crossing Golf Course.
Yankton Bucks Tennis travels to Mitchell today for a varsity quadrangular at Hitchcock Park.
Yankton, Mitchell, Pierre, and Vermillion will all compete in the event. All teams will play each other except Yankton and Vermillion, with matches beginning at 10:30 AM.
