With one week of classes complete at Yankton’s new Trailhead Learning Center, principal Melanie Ryken says having students and parents enjoying the new facility is the culmination of years of planning. Ryken says the success and unique features of the new school is the result of a large number of people participating in the design process.
Ryken says Trailhead boasts numerous unique features like being built on a houses concept rather than traditional halls and classrooms, flexible student options for seating and movement, and calming colors without overstimulating decorations. Ryken says Trailhead also is equipped with a full kitchen.
Ryken says the Trailhead project was sparked by a community survey that yielded over two-thousand responses asking, in part, that the aging Yankton school infrastructure and expanding early learning enrollment be addressed with a new building.
