University of South Dakota Athletic Director Jon Schemmel has announced a $20 million dollar gift from Mr. Denny Sanford to help build a new, state-of-the-art indoor track and field facility. This gift matches the largest gift to South Dakota athletics in program history.
The facility will be known as the Gassen Family Fieldhouse, in honor of the Bill and Jill Gassen. It will feature a 200-meter banked track, perimeter warm-up lanes, and a 60-meter straightaway. There will be two long jump and triple jump pits, two pole vault stations, two high jump areas over straightaways, and two throwing cages.
Schemmel says the new facility will not only benefit track and field athletes, but the entire athletic department.
Schemmel says the university hopes to hold a groundbreaking ceremony as soon as this fall, with plans of building commencing in Spring 2027.
