Mark Kathol and Matthew Sheldon add another accolade to their respective high school careers, as they have been named First-Team All-State for the 2025 Class A Legion Baseball season.
Sheldon posted a .381 batting average in his senior season, driving in thirty runs and tallying fourteen extra base hits, including one home run.
Kathol was the ace of Post 12’s rotation, logging the most innings pitched at 66 and 2/3rds innings. Kathol earned an 8-2 record on the mound, posting a 1.36 ERA with 40 strikeouts. Kathol also picked up a save for Yankton.
Both Sheldon and Kathol will continue their athletic and academic careers at Mount Marty. Also earning recognition for Post 12 were Tate Beste and Beck Ryken. The two athletes were named second-team All-State heading into their senior years at YHS.
Yankton High School will host a Fall Sports Kickoff tomorrow at the Yankton High School Commons.
Food will be served at 6:00, with Fall Sports coaches speaking at 6:30. There is no cost for admission, and the public is invited to attend.
The Fall sports season officially begins on Friday with Soccer and Gazelles’ Tennis.
Yankton Bucks and Gazelles Soccer kicks off their 2025 campaign tomorrow with a pair of home games against Rapid City Stevens.
The Gazelles are coming off an 8-5-2 season in 2024 that saw them finish in the top half of all teams in Class AA.
The Bucks finished 2-11-1 last year and are looking to bounce back after missing the postseason.
The Gazelles play first at 5:00 PM. with the Bucks to follow. Pregame coverage on KYNT and KYNTV begins at 4:00. Brayden Butler will be on the call.
The Mount Marty Lancers have been picked ninth in the GPAC Volleyball preseason poll.
The Lancers picked up 38 points in the poll. MMU finished last season 12-15 overall and 4-12 in GPAC play.
Concordia are the preseason favorite in the conference, followed closely by Northwestern. Only two points separated the top two teams.
The Lancers open their season at the Blue Angel Bash in Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 22nd and 23rd. The full GPAC Preseason Poll is available below.

Yankton Gazelles Tennis begins their season tomorrow afternoon with a triangular in Pierre.
Yankton will take on Pierre at 1:00 PM at Griffin Park, before facing Rapid City Central at 4:00 PM at Labarge Park.
The Tabor Bluebirds have been eliminated from the Class B Amateur Baseball State Tournament following their 10-3 loss to Humboldt-Hartford.
Riley Rothschadl led Tabor with a pair of hits. Seven other Bluebirds recorded a hit in the loss.
Tabor ends their season as the District 6B Champions and the South Central League runners-up.
The Yankton Lakers will take on the Tea Steam tomorrow afternoon in their third game of the Class A Amateur Baseball State Tournament.
Yankton fell to Brookings in their first game of the tournament, 8-6, before bouncing back with a 19-1 win over the Black Hills A’s in game two.
First pitch from Valley Springs is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Friday.
