Yankton Post 12 Legion Baseball is in Waconia, Minnesota, today for the opening day of the 2025 Gopher Classic.
Yankton will compete in the Waconia pool, with games today against New Prague at 4:30 and Waconia at 7:00. Also in Yankton’s pool are Creighton Prep, St. Michael Golds, and Eastview.
Pool play will run through Sunday, with bracket play beginning on Monday. Ninety-six teams are competing in this year’s Gopher Classic, representing seven states and one Canadian Province.
The Freeman Black Sox won a close matchup with the Menno Mad Frogs last night, 6 to 5 in Freeman.
Bailey Sage led Freeman with three hits, while Riley Tschetter and Clint Dangel added a pair of hits each. Jake Weier picked up the win on the mound, throwing six innings of relief.
Dylan Lehr sparked the Menno offense, driving in four runs on two home runs and a double in the loss. Brayden Sattler was credited with the loss.
Freeman improves to 7-6 in league play with the win, while Menno falls to 1-11. The other two scheduled South Central League games for last night, consisting of Yankton vs Tabor and Lesterville vs Wynot, were postponed due to storms in the area.
Next on the SCL schedule is four games on Sunday. Yankton hosts Crofton, Lesterville hosts Menno, and Irene faces Tabor in a doubleheader.
Three men with area ties will receive Hall of Fame recognition from the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association (SDABA) and South Dakota Umpires Association (SDUA)
The men honored will be Doug Schooley, formerly of Yankton; Yankton’s Dr. Tom Stotz; and Wynot’s Lee Heimes.
Inductees will be recognized between Class B semifinal games in the state amateur baseball tournament on Saturday, August 16th.
A pair of Yankton Softball teams will compete at the USA Softball South Dakota State ‘B’ Fastpitch Tournaments, beginning today in Sioux Falls.
Yankton Fury White and SD Intensity will both represent Yankton. Fury White will play the Brookings Outlaws at 5 PM and the Black Hills Silencers at 8 PM, while Intensity will face SD Select at 3:30 and Venom at 8:00.
Including Fury White and Intensity, Yankton will have ten teams in total competing at the state tournament, ranging from 10U squads to the 18U level.
