The Yankton Lakers came back from an early deficit to defeat the Wynot Expos last night, 7-4, in South Central League play.
Yankton was led by Will Rauch and Collin Zahrbock at the plate, with both players recording two hits. Evan Steiner picked up the win on the mound, with Hudson Waldow throwing the final two innings of relief.
Devin Lammers led all hitters in the loss for Wynot, finishing 3 for 4 at the plate. Jackson Sudbeck was tagged with the loss.
Yankton remains undefeated on the season with the win. They will face Vermillion in a non-league matchup tomorrow. Wynot will be on the road for their next game, taking on the Crofton Bluejays on Thursday.
The South Central Amateur Baseball League has several games scheduled for this week, with at least one game every night from Thursday to Sunday.
On Thursday, the Wynot Expos will travel to Crofton to take on the Bluejays in the lone league game of the evening.
On Friday, Menno will celebrate the Fourth of July with a home matchup against the Freeman Black Sox.
On Saturday, Lesterville welcomes Tabor to town as the Broncs host the Bluebirds in a matchup of top-5 teams.
On Sunday, three games will be played between four teams. Freeman will host Tabor in a single game, while Irene and Crofton will play in a doubleheader.
Entering this week’s run of games, Yankton currently holds the top spot in the South Central League, followed by Tabor and Wynot rounding out the top three. Lesterville is fourth, followed by Freeman, Crofton, and Irene, with Menno rounding out the league table in eighth.
A pair of Vermillion golfers earned top-10 finishes at the Sanford International Series Event yesterday in Aberdeen.
Ronnie Wilharm tied for fourth in the girls’ division with an 81, Aberdeen’s Olivia Braun took first place, shooting 72 for an even par.
On the boys’ side, Cooper Girard tied for 10th with a 78. Tyson Blom took the top spot, winning a two-hole playoff after finishing the round at 72.
As the Yankton Post 12 Legion baseball team continues their holiday break this week, they currently sit in a position to host a first-round playoff matchup at the end of the month.
Post 12 is currently 5th in Class A with 42.73 seed points, only .04 seed points out of 4th, and less than a full point behind 2nd place Watertown.
There are only six Class A games remaining on Yankton’s schedule. As it stands, Post 12 would host #12 Sioux Falls West in a three-game series, with the winner qualifying for the state tournament in Watertown.
