The South Dakota High School Athletics Association Board of Directors recently held a meeting, with the sanctioning of high school baseball being one of the topics.
The board recently conducted a survey sent out to Superintendents and Athletic Directors across the state regarding whether baseball should become a sanctioned sport.
Of the one hundred responses, 42% voted not to sanction at this time, but to revisit the idea in the future, 22% voted the begin in the spring of 2027, and 19% voted outright to not sanction high school baseball.
Those surveyed were also asked to list their top three concerns regarding the sanctioning of high school baseball in South Dakota. 70% listed funding, budget constraints, or enrollment decline as a concern, with 53% mentioning the optics of adding sports while cutting or absorbing teaching positions due to budget cuts.
Of those surveyed, five Class AA schools, twenty-five Class A schools, some as Co-Ops, and nine Class B schools, several as Co-Ops, indicated they would be likely to field a team by the spring of 2027. The board decided to table the discussion and revisit it at a different time.
