The Yankton City Commission has approved an additional funding of $1.6 million in sales tax rebates to the Yankton Mall.
The city commission had approved $1.7 million in sales tax rebates in a sales tax agreement in 2023, which led to the mall adding Hobby Lobby, Marshalls, and Five Below, which are set to open later this year.
Matt Evans, the owner of the Yankton Mall, says the additional $1.6 million will help with improvements at the mall to recruit more national stores.
Evans had tried to get the additional $1.6 million approved in February of this year, but the commission voted against it.
Commissioner Brian Hunhoff says he voted in favor of the mall because the pros outweighed the cons.
The additional $1.6 million will be added to the 10-year timeline that was approved with the $1.7 million in 2023.
The commission approved the amended sales tax agreement with an 8-1 vote.
Evans says with the approval Monday night; it could lead to some additional stores opening with the other stores scheduled to open later this year.
