Craig Nichols Jr. has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Heather Ann Bodden.
The incident occurred on January 2nd, 2025 at Bodden’s Yankton apartment, where Nichols stabbed Bodden over 70 times and severed her head.
Nichols was scheduled to go to trial this summer, but changed his plea Tuesday to Guilty but Mentally Ill to the charge of Second-Degree Murder.
Nichols was diagnosed with schizophrenia after an evaluation by Dr. Josette Lindahl of Vermillion.
With the Guilty but Mentally Ill plea, Nichols will serve a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole in the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
