The 2026 South Dakota Legislative Session saw two property tax bills pass in SB 96 and SB 245.
District 18 Representative, Mike Stevens, says he voted for SB 96, but not SB 245.
A 1.4% increase was approved for the big three of schools, healthcare providers, and state employees. Originally, Governor Larry Rhoden proposed a 0% increase. Stevens says 1.4% is better than 0%, but it’s still not enough.
Despite his concerns with the big three, Stevens felt that Legislators did a good job with the passage of the $7.5 billion budget.
Lawmakers will return to Pierre on March 30th for veto day.
