Yankton Senior Edly Amaro claimed the 215-pound championship on Saturday at the South Dakota High School Boys Wrestling State Tournament.
Amaro claimed the title with a pinfall victory with roughly a minute left in the third period. Amaro is the first state champion for the Bucks since Owen Warren in 2019, and he is the first individual state champion under head coach Robert Coyle III.
Shayce Platt (Boys 165) and Winry Yaggie (Girls 145) also starred for Yankton, as both secured runner-up finishes in their classes.
The Yankton Bucks and Gazelles ended their regular seasons with a doubleheader sweep of Douglas on Saturday in Box Elder.
The Gazelles took game one 52-19 to defeat the Patriots. Jordyn Kudera led the offense with 8 points, followed by 7 points and 3 assists from Eden Wolfgram. The Gazelles end the regular season at 8-12, and will travel to Rapid City on Friday for a SoDak 16 matchup against Rapid City Stevens.
The Bucks ended the afternoon with a 59-35 win. Jackson Kudera followed up his 35-point performance against Spearfish on Friday with a game-high 17 points against the Patriots. The Bucks end the regular season 8-12, winning 7 of their last 9 games after a 1-10 start. The Bucks will travel to Harrisburg on Saturday for their SoDak 16 matchup with the Tigers.
Mount Marty Men’s Basketball had their season come to an end on Saturday in a 78-71 loss to Northwestern in the GPAC Semifinals.
Sutton Arend led the Lancers with 24 points, followed by a 20-point performance for Senior Jake Jensen.
The Lancers end their season with a 16-11 overall record.
Mount Marty Baseball dropped both games of their doubleheader with Bismarck State on Friday in Yankton.
Game one ended 5-1. Corbett Freeman tallied 3 hits and scored the lone run for MMU. Game two ended in a close 7-6 loss for the Lancers. Tristan Fitzsimmons ended the day 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs.
The Lancers head to Florida for their next stretch of games, beginning on March 3rd against Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Mount Marty Softball split their two games this past Friday against William Penn and Viterbo in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Lancers dropped game one 1-6 against William Penn, before picking up a 14-1 win over Viterbo.
In their win, Arin Eaton led the Lancers with 3 hits, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs. Kayleen Jacinto added 2 runs and 3 RBIs, with Kalli Boom driving in a pair of runs
Mount Marty will be in Florida for their next stretch of games, beginning tomorrow against Carolina University.
Yankton Bucks Hockey ended their regular season on Sunday with a 5-0 shutout of the Watertown Lakers.
Four different players scored for Yankton in the win. Rylan Murphy had 2 goals, with Tucker Renken, Kade Schramm, and Kylen O’Connor all scoring once. Luke Moeller stopped all 25 shots on net for his 5th shutout of the season.
The Bucks enter the postseason as the #3 seed in the State Tournament. The tournament will run from March 12th through the 14th at the Scheels IcePlex in Sioux Falls.
The Crofton Warriors will return to the Class C2 Girls Basketball State Tournament this week, following Friday’s 52-40 win over Elmwood-Murdock.
The #7 Warriors will face #2 Elkhorn Valley at the Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, at 1:30 PM on Wednesday in the opening round.
Crofton Warriors Boys Basketball will travel to Fremont, Nebraska, tomorrow night to take on Bergan Catholic in the District C2-2 Championship.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM Tuesday evening. The winner will earn a spot in next week’s Boys State Tournament.
South Dakota Coyotes Men’s Basketball completed their first season sweep of rivals South Dakota State in nearly 30 years on Saturday, defeating SDSU 75-70.
A balanced offense for the Coyotes saw five different players score in double figures. Jordan Crawford and Cameron Fens led with 17 each. Uzziah Buntyn finished with 15, followed by 11 from Vince Buzelis and 10 from Ethan Kizer.
The Jacks were led by a game-high 24 points from Joe Sayler, followed by 15 from Damon Wilkinson.
The Coyotes enter this week’s Summit League tournament as the #3 seed, while the Jackrabbits are the #7 seed.
South Dakota State Women’s Basketball avenged their previous loss to rivals South Dakota on Saturday, defeating the Coyotes 82-49.
Brooklyn Meyer was dominant for SDSU, posting a game-high 33 points, adding 7 rebounds and a pair of assists.
Molly Joyce led the Coyotes in the loss, ending the night with 21 points. Jenna Hopp and Angelina Robles followed with 11 each.
The win gives SDSU the edge over USD in seeding for the Summit League Tournament. The Jacks earned the #2 seed while the Coyotes will be #3.
