The Mount Marty Lancers were swept by Northwestern on Saturday in their GPAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball doubleheader.
In game one, the Lancer women fell by a single point, 62-61. Lacey Sprakel and Kaela Martinez tied for a team-high 12 points each.
The Lancer men dropped their matchup 76-66 to end the night. Jake Jensen led with 16 points, followed by 15 each from Sutton Arend and Jackson Edman.
The Lancers are back in action on Wednesday, as they host Midland in a doubleheader. The women play first at 6:00 PM, with the men to follow.
Mount Marty Baseball is 1-1 to start their 2026 season after splitting their season-opening doubleheader against Mount Mercy.
The Lancers fell in game one 21-7. Lucas Kampshoff went 3 for 4 with a run scored at the plate.
A Tyler Vance walkoff three-run home run gave the Lancers the 13-12 victory in game two. Vance went 3 for 4 with 4 runs and 5 RBIs in the win.
The Lancers are back in action today for another pair of games against Mount Mercy. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
Yankton Gazelles Gymnastics scored a 136.6 at Saturday’s State Qualifying meet to earn a spot in the Class AA State Gymnastics meet.
The Gazelles were 3rd in their session and 6th overall. Avery Portillo led Yankton in the all-around, placing 7th with a 34.725.
The State competition is scheduled for February 13th and 14th at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
The Mount Marty Lancers set a pair of program records on Saturday with a runner-up finish at the Concordia Cheer Invitational in Seward, Nebraska.
The Lancers set a new mark in team score with a 78.18, and their second-place finish is the highest in program history.
The Lancers Cheer team will next compete in Hastings on Wednesday.
Yankton Bucks Wrestling placed 5th as a team on Saturday at their home invitational.
The Bucks were led by a 215-pound championship for Edly Amaro. Also for the Bucks, Zane Portillo (157) and Shayce Platt (165) placed 3rd. Drace Gaskins (285) was 4th. Colton Archer (106), Peyton Eustace (190), and Cain Steinberg (215) placed 5th. Damian Janish (113) and Ethan Smith (126) each finished 6th, and Caden Janssen (144) finished 8th.
The next scheduled competition for the Bucks is the Region 2A Tournament on February 20th.
Yankton Gazelles Wrestling placed 11th as a team at their home invitational this past Friday.
Yankton scored 58 points as a team, led by a 2nd place finish at 145 for Winry Yaggie. Also for the Gazelles, Alexis Brendan was 4th at 120, and Jaclyn Kyte was 6th at 135.
Yankton will travel to Brandon to compete in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament on Thursday.
Yankton Bucks and Gazelles Bowling split their doubleheader with Brandon Valley this past Friday at the Yankton Bowl.
The Gazelles won their matchup 43.5-6.5. Avery Turner led Yankton with a 256 high game and a 643 series.
The Bucks would fall in a close match 26-24. Blake Kautz rolled a 230 high game and 645 series to lead the Bucks.
Next up for the Bucks and Gazelles is their regular-season finale on Friday against Sioux Falls Washington at the Yankton Bowl.
The University of South Dakota Football program will head into their 2026 campaign with their third head coach in as many years, as Matt Vitzhum has been named the 32nd head coach of Coyote Football following the departure of Travis Johansen to Rutgers after one season.
Vitzhum has spent the past two seasons on staff with the Coyotes as an assistant coach, helping lead USD to FCS Quarterfinal appearances in both seasons.
After originally serving as wide receivers coach, Vitzhum was promoted to Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach last season.
Vitzhum steps into the top job with over a decade of experience as a coach that has spanned all three NCAA Divisions.
