When lawmakers approved the new state penitentiary last week, there was representation from Yankton County in attendance.
Yankton Police Chief, Jason Foote, who was on the task force that came up with the plan that was approved, testified in committee hearings about the need for a new prison.
Foote said he felt relief once the prison bill passed.
Chief Foote wasn’t the only one from Yankton County in attendance, as Yankton County Sheriff, Preston Crissey, and Yankton County State’s Attorney, Tyler Larsen, also made the trip to Pierre.
Crissey said he felt it was important to be there to show support on the law enforcement side of things.
The new penitentiary, which will be located in Sioux Falls, will cost $650 million and house 1,500 beds.
