South Dakota lawmakers on Tuesday approved a $650 million plan to replace the state’s aging penitentiary with a new 1,500-bed facility in Sioux Falls, the largest expenditure in state history.
Senate Bill 2 passed the House in a 51-18 vote after a special session, following a 24-11 vote in the Senate.
Governor Larry Rhoden signed the bill Tuesday night in his Capitol office in Pierre.
Rhoden also signed an Executive Order to establish the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force, which will look into how to expand rehabilitation services as the state plans for the new prison.
