Yankton Bucks football defeated the defending Class 11-AA State Champion Watertown Arrows on Friday, 52-26 in their home opener.
The Bucks amassed over 400 yards of total offense, led by Quarterback Tate Beste, who threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns in his second start. Owen Eidsness led the Bucks receivers with 156 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The Bucks’ defense and special teams scored as well in the win, as Cale Haselhorst had a 99-yard pick-six and Tegan Lacroix had an 89-yard kick return for a touchdown.
Yankton improved to 2-0 with the win. They are back in action on Friday, hosting the Douglas Patriots at Crane-Youngworth Field.
The Mount Marty Lancers opened their GPAC Football slate with a win on Saturday, defeating the Waldorf Warriors 35-10 in Forest City, Iowa.
Rugby Ryken threw for 130 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win, with Rodney Broadnax leading the receivers with 59 yards and a score. Malachy Harts, 89 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Kyle Hirsch, 93 yards, commanded the running game for MMU.
Defensively, the Lancers held Waldorf to 214 yards of total offense and only 71 rushing yards in the win. Arthur Oliver forced a turnover as well, with an interception for the Lancers.
Mount Marty has their home opener next week, as they host Northwestern at Crane-Youngworth Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday.
Mount Marty Volleyball fell to the Concordia Bulldogs on Saturday in a three-set sweep at Cimpl Arena.
The Lancers took the #2-ranked team in the NAIA to the limit in two of the three sets, as the Bulldogs won 25-22, 25-13, and 26-24.
Caitlin Guenther led the Lancers with 13 kills in the loss. Julia Weber finished with 27 assists and 14 digs.
The Lancers are now 6-4 on the season, 0-1 in GPAC play. They will be on the road on Wednesday to take on another ranked opponent in Midland. First serve from Fremont, Nebraska, is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
Yankton finished 15th (Bucks) and 31st (Gazelles) respectively at the Augustana Twilight Meet last Friday in Sioux Falls.
Harrison Krajewski led the Bucks, 39th individually, with a time of 15 minutes, 53.73 seconds.
The Gazelles’ highest finishers were Rilyn Jackson, 113th, and Abby Johannesson, 115th.
Next up for Yankton is the Brandon Valley Invitational on Sept. 13.
Yankton Gazelles Tennis swept their triangular last Friday, defeating Sioux Falls Jefferson and Spearfish.
The Gazelles defeated the Cavaliers 5-3. Nora Krajewski, Sabrina Krajewski, and Karalyn Koerner won in singles play. Nora and Sabrina also won their doubles match, as did Koerner and Meagan Scott.
The Gazelles would finish the event with a sweep of Spearfish, defeating the Spartans 9-0.
Next up for the Gazelles is a home dual against Sioux Falls Roosevelt tomorrow. Matches begin at 4:00 PM at the SAC Tennis Courts.
Yankton Bucks Golf placed 4th in their quadrangular in Brandon last Friday, shooting a 317 as a team.
The Bucks placed two athletes in the top 10 individually, as Gus Sprakel and Elijah Larson tied for 10th.
Next up for the Bucks is a home invite next Friday at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club. Tee time is 10:00 AM.
Yankton Gazelles Volleyball has their first of two straight nights of action tonight, as they host Sioux Falls Washington inside the Summit Activities Center.
First serve is scheduled for 6:30 PM this evening. The Gazelles will take the court again tomorrow, as they host Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
Yankton Bucks and Gazelles Soccer returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon, as they host Brandon Valley at Crane-Youngworth Field.

Mount Marty Women’s Soccer fell to the University of Sioux Falls last Friday, 2-1 in Sioux Falls.
Mika Moreira scored the lone goal for Mount Marty, just over 77 minutes into the match. Brooklyn McNac recorded 8 saves in net.
The Lancers travel to Storm Lake, Iowa, for their next match, as they take on Buena Vista in a men’s and women’s doubleheader on Wednesday.

Mount Marty Men’s and Women’s Cross Country opened their season on Friday with the Augustana Twilight Meet in Sioux Falls.
The Lancer men were led by a 53rd-place finish by Joseph Cross, while Lilly Whiteshirt led the MMU women, placing 143rd.
Both competitions consisted of over 300 runners, representing institutions from the NAIA and NCAA Division I, II, and III levels.

The South Dakota Coyotes are 0-2 to start their 2025 football season, following a 20-13 loss to Lamar on Saturday.
The Coyote offense outgained Lamar in the loss, 243 to 204, but the Cardinals were able to secure the 7-point win.
USD will have their home opener this coming Saturday, as they host Northern Colorado inside the DakotaDome. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
The #2 South Dakota State Jackrabbits outlasted the #3 Montana State Bobcats in a double overtime thriller on Saturday, winning 30-24 in Bozeman, Montana.
Quarterback Chase Mason recorded 4 total touchdowns in the win, 3 passing and 1 rushing. The Jackrabbit defense was able to force a pair of turnovers in the win.
SDSU, 2-0 on the year, returns home to host Drake on Saturday. Kickoff from Brookings is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are 2-0 to start the 2025 football season, as they defeated the Akron Zips on Saturday, 68-0.
The Huskers recorded 728 yards of total offense in the win, while holding Akron to 175 yards. Quarterback Dylan Raiola threw for 364 yards and 4 touchdowns in the win, while running back Emmett Johnson posted a career high 140 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
