South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden announced last week a new 3.8-million-dollar facility to be built in Yankton to support pregnant women and young mothers struggling with addiction.
Funding for the facility is part of a bill previously brought forward by former Senator Jean Hunhoff in 2022.
Hunhoff says her first exposure to mothers struggling with addiction came during her time as a nurse.
Hunhoff says that when she originally brought the bill forward, she had to compromise to keep the bill alive.
Hunhoff says having a local treatment facility is important, stating that when her daughter struggled with addiction, they had to travel over nine hours to a facility in Decatur, Illinois.
The new facility will be built by Avera Sacred Heart Hospital and staffed by Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services.
