The second game of Yankton Post 12’s recent Legion baseball doubleheader against Rapid City Post 22 has now been ruled a forfeit due to a rule infraction.
The rule in question is Rule 1.S.3 of the American Legion baseball rulebook, which states that “If a team has multiple games on the same day, a pitcher who pitches more than 45 pitches in Game 1 may not pitch in a subsequent game that day.”
Post 22’s Skyler Montgomery threw 55 pitches in their 7-6 win in game one, before entering game two and throwing nearly 50 more pitches in a 7-4 win for Post 22.
Throughout the two games, Montgomery struck out eight Yankton batters and allowed only one hit and no runs over 3 and 1/3rds innings in game two.
Yankton is now listed as 19-7 overall, including an 11-5 record in Class A play. The loss is the first of the season for Post 22 against Class A opponents.
The South Dakota Legion Baseball Class A Standings now recognize the game as a 9-0 win for Yankton. Yankton also moves from 5th to 4th in the standings. Post 22 remains in 1st despite the ruling. The result of game one remains unchanged.
Yankton returns to action on July 7th with a home doubleheader against Brandon Valley.
