Yankton Track and Field competed in several events yesterday on the first day of the Class AA State Meet in Sioux Falls.
The competitions included a variety of prelims and event finals, with Yankton multiple athletes placing top-8 in their prelim events.
- The boys’ 400-meter relay team of Alex Swihart, Carson Ness, Evan Serck, and Connor Slaba placed 4th in their prelim with a time of 42.80 seconds.
- The boys’ 3200-meter relay team of Bryton Olson, Luke Feimer, Owen Eidsness, and Ethan Brenden placed 13th in the final.
- The boys’ sprint medley relay team of Alex Swihart, Evan Serck, Carson Ness, and Abram Chance placed 9th in the final.
- Cale Haselhorst finished 19th in the boys’ triple jump finals and 1st in the 110-meter hurdle prelims.

Top-8 finishers in prelim events advance to the finals. Day two of the Class AA State Championships is scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM at Howard Wood Field.

The South Dakota High School Class AA Girls’ Golf State Championships begin on Monday, with the Yankton Gazelles set to compete.
The two-day event will be held at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls. Tee time for day one is scheduled for 9:00 AM on Monday morning.
A new school record was set on the track, and a pair of University of South Dakota pole vaulters earned their spots in the NCAA Track and Field National Championships yesterday at the NCAA West First Round in College Station, Texas.
Sara Reifenrath set a new USD record in the 400-meter run, finishing in 52.01 seconds to qualify for the quarterfinals. Reifenrath also qualified for the quarterfinals in the 200-meter dash. Also on the track, Averi Schmeichel advanced to the quarterfinals in the 400-meter hurdles.
In the field, both Gen Hirata and Anna Willis qualified for the NCAA National Meet in the women’s pole vault after both cleared 14-6 (4.42 meters). Lydia Knapp just missed out on a top-12 qualification spot in the women’s hammer throw, placing 13th.
The NCAA West First Round continues today.

- Tabor topped Menno 10 to 5.
- Lesterville fell to Wynot 14 to 4.
