The NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships begin today, with nine Lancers making the trip to Marion, Indiana.
For the Lancer men, Luke Rettedal is the lone individual qualifier in the shot put. Austin Gobel, Carl Massa, Chris Munoz-Sturgeon, Zavio Prato, and Jonathan Van Lien also qualified for the 1600-meter relay.
Three Lancer women qualified for the National Meet, all in individual events. Mya Zohner and Paige Clausen will compete in the pole vault, while Zelie Sorensen will run in the 200-meter dash.
The Three-day event begins today and runs through Friday at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.
Yankton Bucks Tennis heads to Sioux Falls tomorrow for the opening day of the Class AA State Tournament.
Five of Yankton’s six athletes were part of last year’s team that placed 4th in the tournament, the best finish for the program .
Competing for the Bucks in singles play will be Zachary Briggs at flight one, Harrison Krajewski at flight two, Christopher Rockne at flight three, Luke Moeller at flight four, Ethan Marsh at flight five, and Patrick Kralicek at flight six.
In doubles play, Briggs and Krajewski will play at flight one, Rockne and Moeller at flight two, and Marsh and Kralicek at flight three.
Thursday’s matches will be split between Tomar Park, McKennan Park, and Lincoln High School, with action beginning at 8:00 AM. All matches on Friday will be held at Tomar Park, beginning at 8:00 AM.
Four Yankton athletes have been named Academic All-State honorees by the South Dakota High School Baseball Association.
Kael Garry, Trey Sager, Evan Serck, and Matthew Sheldon all earned the honor by having a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
Other area athletes honored include Bon Homme’s Jackson Kaul and Landon Schmidt, Scotland-Menno’s Trent Guthmiller and Nathan Sayler, and Vermillion’s Carter Hansen, Jack Moskowitz, Connor Peterson, Karson Preister, and Michael Roob.
Yankton Gazelles Softball has once again had their schedule adjusted due to forecasted weather, as Friday’s games against Tea Area and Harrisburg have been moved to Thursday.
Yankton will play the Titans in Tea at noon, before traveling to the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls to take on Harrisburg at 5:30.
Thursday’s games are the final regular-season games for the Gazelles.
Sustained wet weather led to more schedule changes for several area athletic programs yesterday.
- The Dakota Valley at Dell Rapids softball game, scheduled for Tuesday, was moved to Bowden Field on the Augustana University campus in Sioux Falls. Start time was moved to 4 p.m.
- Games in the Region 1B club high school baseball tournament, originally scheduled for Tuesday, were pushed back to Wednesday.
- The Hanson at Bon Homme softball game, scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed to Saturday. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
- The Ethan-Parkston at Avon softball game, scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed to Saturday.
- The Gavyille-Volin at Beresford softball game, scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled,
- The Parker at Scotland-Menno softball game, scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled.
- The non-league amateur baseball game featuring Lesterville at Yankton, scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled.
