Yankton School Board Receives Legislative Preview

The Yankton School Board received a preview of the upcoming 2022 legislative session from local Representative Mike Stevens at their meeting on Monday night.

The South Dakota Department of Education earlier this year released new proposed social studies standards. Governor Kristi Noem shortly thereafter announced she was delaying any changes to allow for public comments.

Yankton School Board Member Terry Crandall asked Stevens if the topic will come up during session…

Stevens says local control is best when it comes to social studies curriculum…

Governor Noem plans to ask the legislature to pass a ban on critical race theory and action civics as the basis for instruction in South Dakota schools. Education leaders in South Dakota have said critical race theory is mostly taught in higher education.
