South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg of Yankton was involved in a motor vehicle crash which killed a pedestrian Saturday night on Highway 14 west of Highmore.
Ravnsborg released a statement Monday night saying he believed he struck a large animal that night, noting he stopped to look around with his cell phone flashlight and called 911. Ravnsborg says he and Hyde County Sheriff Mike Volek surveyed the area that night, and then he drove the Sheriff’s personal vehicle back to Pierre. The Attorney General brought the vehicle back Sunday morning, went to the crash site and discovered the deceased body of 56-year-old Joe Boever of Highmore at the scene.
Ravnsborg had been attending a Lincoln Day Dinner in Redfield that night and says he had not been drinking alcohol at the event.
The Yankton lawyer was elected to the position of South Dakota Attorney General two years ago.
