Municipal Utility Rate Increases Approved

The Yankton City Commission has approved increases of five percent for sewer rates and three percent for solid waste collection and water rates and with major work on the municipal waste water treatment plant on the not too distant horizon, the possibility of future rate increases is very real.

City Manager Amy Leon says one possibility could be a surcharge on waste water service much like the surcharge placed on water service a few years ago.

Leon says between the cost of new infrastructure and the need to cover operating expenses, a reduction in utility rates any time soon is unlikely.

Leon says the ongoing costs of the city’s popular single stream recycling program is a another factor that could cause future utility rate increases.
