A court-ordered reduction in the number of prisoners that can be held in the Yankton County Jail due to the COVID 19 pandemic is responsible for local officials seeking an agreement with Bon Homme County to house over-flow prisoners.
Yankton City Manager Amy Leon says the agreement covers under what circumstances local prisoners would be moved to Bon Homme County as well as the cost for housing.
Leon says the court-ordered catch and release policy has resulted in situations where criminals were arrested for different felony offenses on the same day.
Leon says concern for public safety requires adequate housing for people who have been charged with serious offenses.
The agreement with Bon Homme County is on the agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Yankton City Commission.
