While rate increases for municipal wastewater, solid waste and water services are never popular with residents, city officials contend those increases are needed, especially with a potential new wastewater treatment plant on the city’s horizon.
City Manager Amy Leon says the current proposal is to increase rates for trash collection and water by three percent with wastewater service increasing by five percent.
Leon says for an average user, the rate increases amount to a total of about three dollars and seventy cents per month.
Leon says the larger increase for wastewater is directly tied to the city’s need for a new wastewater treatment plant.
Leon says a municipal budget workshop is set for August 10th, following that evening’s regular Yankton City Commission meeting.
