KYNT Local Sports for 8-7-20

Lesterville had the Class B defending state amateur baseball champions on the ropes yesterday, but Alexandria scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Broncs 8-7.   Dave Schmidt and Brandon Nickolite each had three hits for Lesterville in the loss.  In the first game Thursday at Mitchell, Parkston used a three-run homer from Matt Malloy to eliminate the Tabor Bluebirds 5-2.  In the defeat, Beau Rothschadl led Tabor with four hits.

The Class A portion of the state amateur baseball tournament continues this weekend at Riverside Field in Yankton.  Tonight at 8:00, the Yankton Tappers face the Rapid City Diamondbacks.  There are four games in the Class B state tourney in Mitchell today.  At 8:00 this evening, the Irene Cardinals take on Redfield.

South Dakota High School football games are scheduled to begin in two weeks for the smaller schools and three weeks from tonight for the larger 11-man teams.  Organized practices begin Monday, and the Yankton Bucks first contest comes up Friday, August 29th with the long trip to Spearfish.  In a related matter due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sioux Falls School District has split apart their annual President’s Bowl games.  Washington faces Harrisburg on Friday September 4th, with Lincoln taking on Roosevelt the next night.

South Dakota State senior Teresa Toscano won her first-round match in the U-S Women’s Amateur golf tourney in Maryland on Thursday.  Toscano qualified 43rd out of 156 golfers this week in the stroke-play portion, and yesterday she beat Stanford freshman Sadie Englemann 3 and 2.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Board of Directors has delayed the start of their Fall Sports competition.  Practices for Northern Sun teams in football and cross-country can begin on September 2nd with the first date of competition set for September 26th.  Volleyball and Soccer practices can being September 8th with games starting on October 2nd.  The Northern Sun Conference consists of 16 schools including Augustana, Sioux Falls, Northern State and Wayne State.
