The Class B state amateur baseball tournament in Mitchell begins with a pair of games this evening.  Madison takes on Groton in the state tourney opener at 5:30, followed by the Dell Rapids Mudcats against Plankinton.  The first two games Thursday involve South Central League teams as Tabor faces Parkston at 11 a-m, followed by Lesterville against Alexandria.

Brandon Valley now joins Rapid City Post 22, Renner and Pierre in the Class A Legion Baseball state tournament this weekend.  Last night, Brandon Valley eliminated Mitchell 11-4 as Mount Marty recruit Hunter Marso pitched five innings for the win, allowing just one hit with ten strikeouts.  The Class A Legion tourney begins Friday with the championship game coming up Sunday.

Yankton Bucks senior Landon Moe shot a 78 yesterday in the second round of the High School Boys Golf National Invitational at Pinehurst in North Carolina.  Moe has a two-day total of 162 and is tied for 121st in the nation heading into the final round today at Pinehurst.

South Dakota State women’s golf standout Sydney Bormann of Parkston has earned a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.  There are only 21 of these ten-thousand dollar scholarships given out to women among all three NCAA divisions.  Bormann graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA majoring in Human Biology and ranks sixth all-time for the Jackrabbits in scoring average on the golf course.

The women’s collegiate triathlon fall season has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.  The announcement came this week from USA Triathlon in conjunction with their coaches association.  The organization is exploring the idea of a competitive season next spring.  The University of South Dakota Coyotes have finished as the national runner-up in Triathlon the past two seasons.
