Following action by the Yankton School Board Tuesday night, with the exception of situations where they are able to socially distance themselves, Yankton School District students will be required to wear face masks when classes start next month.
Because of the low COVID 19 transmission rate among children, Dr. Michael Pietela says the use of facemasks would primarily be aimed at keeping the adults who come in contact with students safe.
Board member Frani Kiefer says her priorities are to keep students in the classroom and to keep everyone safe.
The decision is not a popular one with at least some school district parents.
The mother of three students in the Yankton School District Stacey Nickels says some parents, including herself are looking at moving their children to another school district where masks are not required.
August 24th is the first day for classes in the Yankton School District.
