With work progressing on Yankton’s municipal budget over the summer months, city officials are seeing another round of utility rate increases for city residents in the near future.
Mayor Nathan Johnson says water rates are expected to grow by three percent next year.
Johnson says, in order to help generate funding for a new wastewater treatment plant at some point in the future, wastewater rates will increase by five percent.
Johnson says while utility rate increases are never popular with residents, small increases regularly made over time are better than waiting until financing for a project is needed and making larger rate increases.
Johnson says these rate increases are preliminary and more work on the 2021 Yankton municipal budget will be accomplished next (this) month.
