Yankton High School graduate Jaiden Boomsma has been named the Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year for South Dakota. Boomsma set a school-record by scoring 16 goals this season in leading the Gazelles to their first Class AA soccer championship, and she scored the winning goal in the title game against Aberdeen Central. Boomsma will compete in track and field at South Dakota State in the next school year. Yankton High School now boasts two Gatorade Player of the Year winners from the past year, as Matthew Mors was named the top boys basketball player in the state.
The South Dakota High School Activities Association has approved a second reading of a proposal to add a Girls Division in Wrestling effective in the upcoming school year. South Dakota will become the 25th state in the nation to sanction Girls Wrestling. Next season will begin with one classification and four weight classes for girls, with the top eight participants in each weight class qualifying for the state wrestling tournament alongside the boys division at the same event.
