Decisions on organized baseball in South Dakota this summer will be made within the next two weeks. American Legion officials and South Dakota Amateur Baseball commissioners will each decide by May 15th whether there will be Legion baseball and/or amateur baseball tournaments in South Dakota this year.
There was an organized non-league amateur baseball game played last night in Lesterville, as Mount Vernon edged the Broncs 6-5 in ten innings. Dave Schmidt and Ian Powell each homered for Lesterville.
This would have been championship weekend in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The first weekend in May is always set aside for post-season tournaments in baseball and softball, as well as outdoor track and field and tennis.
Senior basketball star Ciara Duffy and senior record-setting pole vaulter Chris Nilsen have been selected as the University of South Dakota Athletes of the Year. Duffy averaged 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists per game for the Coyotes and was named the Mid-Major Player of the Year. Nilsen set an all-time NCAA record with an indoor pole vault of 19 feet, 5 ½ inches and was named the National Indoor Athlete Field Event Athlete of the Year.
