As with any other industry today, people who rely on tourism for their incomes are facing an uncertain future due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
Yankton Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Kasi Haberman says recent survey numbers show that while people are eager to travel, the coronavirus outbreak has forced the majority to change their plans for the near future.
Haberman says one trend that could benefit local tourism businesses is people traveling closer to home this year.
Haberman says another positive trend is the number of people reporting efforts to spend their dollars with local businesses whenever possible.
The South Dakota Department of Tourism reports that more than fifty-five thousand jobs across the state are directly tied to the tourism industry.
