Yankton City Commission Votes To Close Businesses

Meeting in special session Tuesday, the Yankton City Commission passed an ordinance that will close a large number of local businesses beginning at midnight Thursday to the general public through the end of April.

City Commissioner Amy Miner says municipal government has a responsibility to make the health and welfare of local citizens its top priority.

City Health Board member Dr. Mary Milroy says with an unknown number of COVID 19 cases in our area, it may be safer for people to remain at home than to go out in public.

Chief of Police John Harris says his department will work to educate business owners about the new restrictions before any criminal charges result from violating the COVID 19 ordinance.

Contingent upon the approval of the Yankton County Commission, the Yankton City Commission also voted to move this year’s municipal election to the June 9th primary election date
