The Yankton County Commission met in special session Saturday to discuss with residents of five northeastern townships the longstanding complaints they have with county government that has led them to openly discuss succeeding and joining Turner County or forming their own county.
Chairman Cheri Loest says her role in this situation is to remain neutral on the issue while working to educate citizens on both the pros and cons.
Some of the complaints concern production livestock zoning and Loest says the county is looking at revising their zoning regulations.
Loest says at least part of the solution to the issues that township residents are concerned with involves having people who are willing to serve on boards such as the county commission and planning commission.
Loest says another special Yankton County Commission meeting may be scheduled in the near future to further discuss the issue of secession.
