South Dakota is the only state in the nation that charges its’ citizens with a felony level criminal offense for ingesting a controlled substance and a bill introduced by District 18 Senator Craig Kennedy this legislative session aims to change that.
Kennedy says Senate Bill 115 is getting support from a wide spectrum of political organizations.
Kennedy says he is waiting for updated figures, but a recent estimate showed a cost savings to taxpayers of just over five million dollars a year by lowering the ingestion offense to a misdemeanor.
Kennedy says the goal of the bill is attempting to find a more effective way of addressing the issue of drug abuse than what we currently are using.
Kennedy’s bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, no date for hearing has been set.
