The South Dakota High School wrestling state championships conclude today at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls. Yankton has dropped to 23rd place in Class A, and Bucks sophomores Owen Warren and Tucker Baym are both still alive in the wrestle-backs with a chance for third place in their weight classes. Vermillion senior Lucas Anglin remained unbeaten and goes for his third consecutive state title in the finals this evening.
The Yankton Bucks used strong defense to edge St. Thomas More 46-42 Friday night in Rapid City in a battle of top seeded teams. Hunter Kotrous led the Bucks with 17 points as they handed the Cavaliers their first loss of the season. Yankton is now 15 and 4 and concludes their regular season today at Douglas.
St. Thomas More started fast and held off the Yankton Gazelles 51-39 last night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Madison Wuebben led Yankton with 14 points as the Gazelles had their ten-game winning streak snapped. The Yankton girls are 13 and 6 overall with their final regular season game at Douglas this afternoon.
Second-seed Crofton crushed the Freeman Falcons 57-13 last night to win a district title and advance to the Class C-2 girls basketball state tournament next week. In Class D-1, 13th-seed Hartington Cedar Catholic upset Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 71-59 last night. In Class D-2, fourth-seed Wynot rolled past Crawford 54-13 to qualify for state, while Humphrey St. Francis beat Bloomfield 63-21.
This afternoon in the Nebraska Boys Basketball district finals in Class C-2, sixth-seed Hartington Cedar Catholic faces Palmyra at 3:00. Both teams are 18 and 6 on the season.
The Mount Marty men’s basketball team plays at Dakota Wesleyan this afternoon in the G-PAC semifinals. The Lancers are the sixth-seed with a 20 and 11 overall record while the 12th-ranked Tigers are the second seed in the conference.
