KYNT Local Sports for 2-13-20

Mount Marty upset tenth-ranked Dakota Wesleyan 72-61 in men’s basketball last night at the Cimpl Arena.  Senior Colby Johnson led the 18th-ranked Lancers with 21 points and junior Ryan Warren chipped in 17 points with 7 steals.  Mount Marty swept Wesleyan in two men’s basketball games this season and now has a season record of 19 and 8.  The Lancers are 10 and 7 and fifth in the G-PAC, just one game out of second place.

Mount Marty led by one point at halftime in the women’s contest, but 13th-rated Dakota Wesleyan used a big third quarter and beat the Lancers 74-66 last night in Yankton.  Jamie Tebben had 19 points and 8 rebounds for Mount Marty, and Hannah Williams added 17 points and 7 boards.  Senior Kynedi Cheeseman paced the Tigers with 35 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.  The Lancer women are 13 and 13 overall and tied for eighth place in the conference.  Mount Marty plays a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Concordia.

The Mount Marty College women’s golf program has announced the signing of Caitlyn Stimpson of Wagner for their golf team.  Stimpson has placed 9th and 11th the past two years at the Class A state tournament, and has been a five-year letter-winner for the Red Raiders golf team.

The South Dakota men’s basketball squad shot 57 percent in the second half to pull away and defeat Western Illinois 85-72 last night in Vermillion.  Stanley Umude led the Coyotes with 28 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in their eighth consecutive victory.  USD is 9 and 3 in the Summit League and now 19 and 8 overall heading into a Saturday night game at Oral Roberts.

The USD women’s basketball squad continues their season tonight with a game against Western Illinois at 7:00 at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.  The Coyotes are unbeaten in 11 Summit League games, 22 and 2 overall, and rated 16th in this week’s USA Today/Coaches poll.

The Yankton Gazelles look to extend a five-game winning streak tonight with a home game against Watertown.  Yankton is rated fifth in the state at 8 and 5 overall, with the Arrows at 1 and 13.  Our broadcast starts at 6:30 on 1450, KYNT.
