James River Bridge Funding

With four bridges over the James River as part of their inventory of structures to maintain and an ongoing lack of revenue with which to fund those repairs, the longstanding issue for Yankton County government has been where to find the dollars needed to make those projects a reality.

Yankton County Commission Chairman Cheri Loest says several commission members are involved in the search for funding sources for maintenance dollars.

Loest says the most realistic plan is to find funding and rebuild the four bridges one at a time over a period of many years.

Loest says of the four James River bridges the county is responsible for, Fleege’s Bridge on old Highway 50 is especially concerning due to the amount of bank erosion and scouring at the site.
