KYNT Local Sports for 12-5-19

The Mount Marty men’s basketball team put up 65 points in the second half and upset sixth-ranked Dakota Wesleyan 106-98 last night at the Corn Palace.  It was the Lancers first victory in Mitchell in eight years and moved them into a second place tie in the G-PAC standings.  Jordan Johnson led Mount Marty with 35 points, Chris King added 26 and Colby Johnson scored 25 points…while Ty Hoglund led the Tigers with 43 points in a losing effort.  The Lancers shot 55 percent for the game and 96 percent from the free-throw line is raising their record to 11 and 2.

In the women’s contest in Mitchell last night, Mount Marty led 16-13 late in the first quarter and then went 13 minutes without a point and 13th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan posted a 73-42 victory.  The Lancers shot just 25 percent from the field and 12 percent from three-point range, and were led by 13 points and 8 rebounds from Hannah Williams.  The Mount Marty women are 5 and 4 overall and will travel to Crete, Nebraska Saturday for the G-PAC doubleheader at Doane.

The University of South Dakota women’s basketball team topped Creighton 72-65 last night at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.  Junior center Hannah Sjerven led the Coyotes with a career-high 28 points along with 9 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.  U-S-D is 8 and 1 overall and rated 24th in the nation and will host Coppin State Saturday at 1 p-m in Vermillion.

The South Dakota Class 11-Double-A all-state football squad included three members of the Yankton Bucks.  Senior lineman Wil Pease, junior lineman Zavier Leonard and junior back Trevor Fitzgerald were named All-State this week.  Owen Warren and Ryan Eichacker were given honorable mention in Class 11-Double-A.

Yankton senior Jaiden Boomsma was named South Dakota’s Girls Soccer Player of the Year, and Tyler Schuring was honored as the state’s Girls Soccer Coach of the Year by the United soccer Coaches Association.

Riley Smith is starting his sixth year as head coach of the Yankton Bucks wrestling program.  The Bucks start their season tonight at home with a triangular meet beginning at 5 p-m against Watertown and Beresford.
