KYNT Local Sports for 11-29-19

For the first time in 15 years, the Mount Marty College men’s basketball team is receiving votes in the NAIA national poll.  The Lancer men got five votes in the poll released Wednesday and are rated 36th in the nation.  Mount Marty takes on 20th-ranked St. Ambrose, Iowa Saturday at 5:30 p-m in a game that will be played in Fort Dodge.

The South Dakota men’s basketball team lost an 18-point lead in the second half but then regrouped and edged California Baptist 84-83 Wednesday.  USD senior Tyler Hagedorn led the offense with 29 points and 10 rebounds and Stanley Umude added 18 points and 6 boards.  The Coyotes are 6 and 1 overall with a Saturday afternoon game at Northern Arizona.

The South Dakota women’s basketball team has a pair of games the next two nights in Las Vegas as part of the South Pointe Thanksgiving Shootout.  The Coyotes are 5-1 on the season and will face a 3-2 Ohio State squad at 5:30 tonight in the South Pointe Arena in Vegas, and tomorrow USD takes on Northern Illinois.

The South Dakota State women’s basketball team is also enjoying warm weather this holiday weekend.  The Jacks are 4 and 2 overall after a 61-50 upset victory yesterday over 20th-ranked South Florida.  SDSU will face former national champion Notre Dame at 10:00 this morning in Cancun, Mexico.

Every Thanksgiving Day, the Elite 45 football team is announced by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader highlighting the top 45 football players of any grade or class in South Dakota.  Area players honored this year include linebacker Bailey Sage and quarterback Trey Ortman from Class 9-A state champion Canistota-Freeman…quarterback Chase Mason of Class 9-AA state champ Viborg-Hurley…and quarterback-linebacker Josh Crownover from state runner-up Bon Homme.  Quarterback-defensive back Garrett Stout from the unbeaten Pierre Governors was named the Captain of the Elite 45 team this fall.
