Brandon Valley won the team title and Yankton placed fourth in the E-S-D Conference Girls Tennis tournament Thursday in Harrisburg. Maggie Schaefer led the Gazelles with a runner-up finish at number-two singles. Yankton will compete for honors in the Class A Girls Tennis state tourney next week in Sioux Falls.
Yankton will begin play today in the Girls Softball state tournament in Sioux Falls. The Gazelles finished with a 9 and 14 season record, and will face ninth-seed Brookings today in the first round of the double elimination tourney.
Harrisburg downed Yankton last night by scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-22 in E-S-D volleyball. Chloe McDermott led Yankton with 10 kills and 10 digs. The Gazelles are winless in 15 matches and will play at Sioux Falls Christian Monday.
The Yankton Gazelles and Bucks each finished fifth Thursday at the Watoma Cross-Country Invitational in Watertown. Thea Chance led the Gazelles with a fifth-place finish and Tim Merchen topped the Bucks as he placed 13th.
The Yankton Bucks football team makes the long trip west to face the Sturgis Scoopers tonight. The Bucks are 2 and 3 and rated fifth in Class 11-AA, while Sturgis is 1 and 4 and sixth in the rankings. The University of South Dakota volleyball squad hosts Omaha tonight in a Summit League match at 7:00 at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The Coyotes have a 13 and 1 season record with a ten match winning streak.
In the Summit League opener on Thursday, North Dakota edged South Dakota 2-1 in women’s soccer. The Coyotes are 5 and 7 overall and will face North Dakota State on Sunday.
