Municipal Utility Rate Increases

Following action last night by the Yankton City Commission, Yankton City residents can expect a hike in the rates they are paying for wastewater, solid waste collection and water service.

The fees for those services were each raised five percent and City Manager Amy Leon says operational costs only make up a portion of the increase, improvements such as a new water treatment plant play a large role in the rate hike.

Leon says damage to the municipal wastewater system related to March’s flooding is another cost that must be paid for.

The new rates go into effect in November.
